BLACK WOODEN
_Southern Records
Black Wooden
The Bottomless Pit
If We Knew
Appetite
Marriage
Mount Eerie Revealed (Version)
Black Wooden
Wood that has been burned; black wooden
Wood in the dark; black wooden
The sound of wood over water, over bodies
Wood; a shape in the low light
Black wooden
The dark behind the house,
The branch scraping the wall; black wooden
The rock sticking out of the yard; black wooden
Wood rotting in an unknown place; black wooden
Black wooden; a single tree that grows black,
Who’s wood burns brightly
Raising clouds,
Flickering light
The Bottomless Pit
Singing about the mountains and the cloud,
Death on the peak, the vast silence
It probably seems like I’m turning my head and loving a lost world
That may be true, but I have actually seen it:
The bottomless pit on the side of the trail,
I have actually seen it:
Yeah, I drove out to the state park with my belly full, and the weight on my back
There’s another world inside this one but you don’t have to go there
I have actually seen it:
The bottomless pit opens when you yawn
Letting it all go or taking it all in,
Which way should I live out my short life?
Meanwhile, it all yawns indifferently
If We Knew
We would not be so scared of losing hair and slowing down
If we knew that our hearts are not aging
Our little hearts are born already ancient
We would not be so scared to say “I do” and settle down
If we knew that our hearts never come dating
They stay at home for us, patiently waiting
We would not be so scared of eating love and lying down
If we knew that mountains would be unveiling
We would not be so scared of being swallowed by the ground
If we knew that greater bodies still were waiting
Dotted lines in the air tomorrow morning
Appetite
A satiated bear sitting back on the chair
I'm full, so now how am I aware?
Our bones blow away but what do I care?
Mountain shape
Towns people's offerings
Are you still standing there, my delicate contentedness?
Mountain shape
And soon I’ll be hungry
Are you coming over for dinner?
Are you coming over for lunch? (*?)
A hole in the side of the building
A crack in the mountain opens
Contentedness on its foundation
Of constantly waking up to obliteration
Of pieces of world and blown away bones
I'm full and I have found my home
Sitting up in the bed in the small town, at night
Mountain shape
Was that someone knocking?
It was my appetite, curious and wide-eyed
Two question marks
And then the door blew down
Marriage
A marriage in the night
Makes two babies in the morning
With no parents
O, my heart
Is this my heart and is it thumping?
O, my heart
O, there you are
I had stopped hunting
I thought you would be as big as a whale
My nets were knit,
I had my harpoons armed,
I had my ship sailed
But o, my heart, well there you are;
Mouse nest in my hair
O, my heart
O, sleepy heart, I had stopped hunting
Mount Eerie Revealed (Version)
Obscured and then revealed again
Knowing something and letting it get light
The light pours in the window at dawn
And I’m sleeping there, hang-gliding blind
There’s another world inside this one
My eye opens and stops my gliding mind
Knowing where I am all the time
Means the details obscure my view with their designs
Nothing is revealed to me now
Groping in the light for a spear of dark,
A slit in moss, a pile of rocks, a poem’s line
The fabric of the screen pulls apart
I crawl inside and see it from behind
Secret knowledge comes to me in the dusk
An indentation in the lawn, forgotten mind
Revealed and then obscured again
Standing in the fog as it clears, rubbing my eyes
But I know it now, that this will be gone
The wind in the grass will be here,
Undescribed
